Embracing the Journey of Motherhood: Memories Made in Our Travels and Choices

As summer unfolded, my four little explorers, all under ten, embarked on an unforgettable adventure across three countries and numerous towns. The memories we built during this journey transcended mere sightseeing; they strengthened our family bonds and created lasting stories. Time raced by, and I often find myself cherishing these moments even more.

When I decided to leave my career behind while expecting my third child, I knew I was stepping into a new phase of life. I embraced this change wholeheartedly. There’s a unique joy in being productive, whether I’m studying, working, or managing the delightful chaos of family life. Yet, I also recognized that my time with the kids is limited, making every moment precious. I had this urge to not miss this time with them because I realized how fleeting it was. As hard as it was, i'm glad that I chose this path.

The Challenge of Urban Parenting

Living in New York is tough, especially for a millennial mom trying to raise a family on a tight budget. For instance, a recent report showed that parents in cities spend around $20,000 a year on childcare. I wanted my kids to have a great childhood with preschool, playdates, and some me-time. I totally respect those who choose differently, but for me, being a stay-with-my-kid all day mom was super important, mainly because of how I grew up.

The moments we shared during our travels were invaluable. Each destination became a classroom and discovered new cultures and languages. For example, tasting fresh pasta in Italy or dancing at a bubble party in Cinque Terre brought lessons in culture and connection. I often find myself amazed by how my kids interact with the world around them, and it reminds me of the beauty in the little things.

Finding Solace in the Chaos

Whenever I started feeling frustrated, taking deep breaths and reminding myself why I made my choices really helped. I decided to be with my kids full-time so I could see them grow up close. Changing how I looked at tough times made a big difference. Instead of getting overwhelmed by the chaos, I learned to celebrate the small wins — like when my youngest made a new friend at the beach.

Traveling with kids can be tricky, but the benefits are huge. We tackled new places together, which boosted our communication and compromise skills. Every trip was a chance for my kids to build resilience. Whether it was walking 15,000 steps a day in a new city or hiking rocky paths in very hot weather to reach a special beach, these experiences helped them become determined and adaptable.

Building Empathy Through Exploration

The memories from our trips are treasures I’ll always hold dear. They remind me how important it is to be present and make the most of our time together. Life can be full of surprises, and I've learned to try to enjoy each moment. At first, I wasn’t sure about being a full-time parent, It was hard but in the end you just have to listen to your heart over everything else.

I've learned that how you see things really matters. I chose this life, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I’m committed to being the change I want to see. As they grow, I hope to teach them values like kindness, curiosity, and resilience.
